USA

The religiously unaffiliated are the fastest growing “religious group” in the U.S.

According to the Pew Research Center, there are approximately 56 million religiously unaffiliated adults in the U.S., more than Catholics or mainline Protestants, and second in size only to evangelical Protestants.

This is most pronounced among younger generations, with 36% of young millennials (those between the ages of 18 and 24) religiously unaffiliated.

This generation is largely influenced by one predominant worldview - Secular Humanism - which affirms that God is irrelevant and man is at the center. In this relativistic culture, we are god and consumerism is our religion.

This is a generation that does not look to the Church for answers, but believes it to be a dead and empty tradition of the past. Either there is no God or, if he exists, he doesn’t interfere with our lives.

We Aren’t Finding Them

The majority of the Church’s evangelistic outreach efforts in the U.S. is focused on reaching those who are already open to the idea of God. Evangelistic efforts are often framed within the isolated setting of church culture, thus failing to connect with the presuppositions of a secular humanistic worldview.

The Gap

The reason the Church struggles to engage young people who would not usually walk into a church is because of the large cultural gap that exists between the Church and the Global Youth Culture.

They have vastly different views on morality, purpose, truth, lifestyle, and even language, and they can remain completely isolated from one another even while living in the same city.

In fact, the gap is often so pronounced that for the church to reach them, they must engage in cross-cultural principles no different than the classic missionary approach of an unreached tribe in foreign land.

Steiger is training and equipping church leaders all over the U.S. to bridge the gap between the Church and the Global Youth Culture

Start a Steiger Team in Your City
Steiger’s vision is establish Steiger teams in cities all over the U.S.

A Steiger City Team is a dynamic, multi-gifted, and multi-denominational missionary team (including full-time missionary leaders and part-time volunteers), specialized in reaching the Global Youth Culture of a key urban center.

Because it both unifies and mobilizes the Church, a Steiger team is a small, yet powerful catalytic force that can impact an entire city.

What a Steiger City Team does:

  • Forms a team whose members are strongly committed to a local church.
  • Develops a “seeking God” culture (through prayer, Bible study, worship, and bold faith).
  • Establishes a regular, relational presence in the secular scene of its city.
  • Engages in weekly, local evangelism (through creative street evangelism, events with bands, and other forms of evangelism).
  • Creates spaces that foster discipleship (community houses, open houses, weekly informal Bible studies).
  • Hosts an annual, large-scale, evangelistic endeavor (online campaign, evangelistic concert, interactive art exhibit, mission trip, etc.)
  • Offers at least one annual mission training event (Steiger seminar, Compact school, or conference).
  • Establishes a network of church and ministry partnerships throughout the city.
